  • KNOW YOUR RIGHTS PACKET: DO YOUR DRIVERS KNOW HOW TO HANDLE A TRAFFIC STOP

With thefts, comes increased enforcement. Over the past month, many of our members have complained about their drivers being stopped for minor infractions. This can stem from recent thefts, actual moving violations, or simply a general feeling of unease in many communities. The ILCA has prepared a packet of information, in English and Spanish, that companies can use to help their drivers through a traffic stop. It informs drivers of their rights and also how to handle their interaction with officers. These were prepared using materials from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. It also contains a card that can be laminated and given to each driver.

  • THE EMPOWERMENT PACKET

The Empowerment Packet assists legal landscape companies in identifying illegal operators and offers a mechanism for reporting them to the IWCC. The IWCC is staffed with capable employees who are pledged to help clean up our industry. Instead of shaking our heads at this rampant and blatant abuse, The Empowerment Packet offers a process for reporting violators to the regulatory agency with the authority and desire to help.

  • THE SOURCE: STAFFING SOLUTIONS FOR A CHALLENGING LABOR MARKET

Please do not distribute this to non-member companies.

Finding qualified labor has always been the landscape industry’s greatest challenge. From 2007-2012, it is estimated the landscape industry lost 100,000 people, or over 20% of its workforce. In the next ten years, the green industry labor force is expected to grow by 17% – nearly replacing almost all of the labor lost during the recession. The question on every landscape professional’s mind is, “where will I find them?”

The Source includes information on: Day and temporary labor organizations, Latino community organizations, county workforce development boards, veterans organizations, Illinois colleges with horticulture programs, Illinois high schools with horticulture programs, State of Illinois unemployment offices, JobLink.com, Hispanic and Anglo street festivals, and many, many more resources.

  • CONTRACTOR’S GUIDE TO SMALL-SCALE RAIN GARDENS

This manual covers the installation of a type of rain garden termed an “existing soil rain garden.” These are rain gardens whose original soils have been amended solely for healthy plant establishment. This is countered by the “engineered rain garden” whose existing soils have been replaced or heavily amended with a specified soil mix to a depth greater than 1’. With existing soil rain gardens landscapers look at rain gardens as “landscaping with rain.” These rain gardens work with the site conditions to design and install a garden that is primarily designed around rain. This guide will equip you with the information required to design, install, and maintain small-scale rain gardens.

  • SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING MAINTENANCE CALENDAR

This guide is intended to equip Illinois Landscape Contractors Association (ILCA) members with all the tools necessary to implement a sustainable maintenance program. It takes into account the constraints of a landscape company in regards to costs, time, equipment, personnel, and horticultural knowledge. The guide is written so any landscape company can apply these maintenance principles to almost any commercial or residential landscape and improve the positive impact on the environment without sacrificing quality.

The guide is organized as a monthly handbook that doubles as a checklist. Each month, crews are equipped with specific instructions on what actions will be completed that month in order to maintain a healthy, regenerative, and successful sustainable landscape.

  • SUSTAINABLE GUIDE TO RAINWATER HARVESTING

This guide offers step by step construction specifications for building a rainwater harvesting system. Rainwater harvesting systems capture and collect rainwater from impervious surfaces (such as roofs) for use on-site. Some systems filter and purify the water, while others provide a means to distribute it, as in irrigation. These specifications will examine rainwater harvesting for use in distribution and irrigation. Water will be kept outside of the structure and not used for potable intake.
